Look Good, Feel Good; How to keep your skin smooth and clear

  1. The most noticeable part of your skin is your face! So you want to keep it looking great, with a clear and smooth complexion. The first step is to get into a daily habit of washing your face, first thing in the morning and last thing before you go to bed. It's important to be consistent and never miss a day. I tend to wash my face straight after I brush my teeth each morning and each night:

    1. Wash your face with a gentle non alcoholic cleanser. Avoid scrubbing hard or using rough facecloths or funnels. These are likely to irritate your skin and cause blemishes to stay a lot longer.
    2. Use a toner (optional). If you have dry skin, you should avoid using a toner as it can dry your skin out further and cause irritation. Always use an alcohol-free toner, and get a toner that matches your skin type. Toner helps firm and tighten the pores of your skin as it removes dirt and oil.
    3. Moisturise. If you have oily skin, use a light face cream. Moisturise your face every time you wash, shave, or if your skin feels dry.
    4. Remove Makeup Ladies (& Gents). It can be chore to do this if you're tired, sleeping with Makeup on clogs your pores which causes inflammation and pimples/zits. Pick up makeup removal wipes they make the job much easier.

  2. If you suffer from acne and regular outbreaks of pimples consider the following solutions:

    1. Salicylic Acid. Salicylic acid causes the top few layers of skin (most of which is dead) to peel similar to an exfoliation, revealing healthy skin underneath and helping reduce acne by preventing new acne from forming. Daily use has proven quite useful in my own experience.
    2. Benzoyl peroxide Spot Treatment. If your acne is severe, you can find lotions containing Benzoyl Peroxide that you apply evenly over your face at nighttime. The peroxide works in a similar way but attacks the bacteria that causes the acne in the first place.
    3. Face Masks and Exfoliation. Removing dead skin from the top layer of skin on your face usually with a cleanser that contains beads is called exfoliation. I would suggest not using a face mask more than once a week. Exfoliation should also be done infrequently as overdoing it can cause irritation and inflammation. Always read the advice on the label of the products you buy or follow the instructions of a trained professional.
    4. See a Dermatologist. We always recommend seeing a skin specialist as everyone has unique attributes to their skin. Dermatologists are experts who deal with many skin specialist and provide high level treatments that cannot otherwise be bought over the counter. Ask your Doctor to recommend you to one.

  3. Don't Squeeze your spots! It may be tempting if that whitehead has been staring you in the face whenever you see your reflection. Squeezing your spots can have undesired effects on your skin:

    1. Squeezed Spots cause blemishes! A blemish is an inflammation in the epidermis and the dermis - the outer and inner layers of skin. It takes longer for a blemish to heal when they have been popped! So resist the temptation!
    2. Squeezed Spots could leave scars behind! Spots are temporary lasting a few days to a couple weeks, but scars like diamonds - are forever. If you want smooth skin, don't Squeeze your spots!
    3. Avoid touching your face. The oils and dirt your hands pick up from interacting with your environment transfer to your face and can easily cause pores to clog and form spots! Keeping your hands away from your face will also help you break the habit of squeezing spots.

  4. Drink lots of water. Aim to put down 8 full glasses of water a day, and you'll notice a difference in your skin. The extra fluid helps your body flush out toxins and waste. The more you flush out - the purer your sweat will be. The toxins in our plasma from processing food, and burning energy will be sweated out through your pores and can cause them to get clogged! Whether you notice the sweat or not it's there! Also dehydration is one of the causes of dry lips and dry skin. If your lips feel dry then it's likely you haven't had enough fluids.

    1. Girls: aim to drink at least 2.5 Litres, or nine cups of water a day. If you're having trouble drinking that much, cut down on sugary soft drinks and replace with water.
    2. Guys: aim to drink at least 3 Litres, or 13 cups, of water a day.
    3. The colour of your urine is a clear indicator if you haven't had enough water. The darker the colour - the less healthy, the lighter - the better.
  5. Sleep Your skin to Freshness. You might be getting dirt and oil on your face while you're sleeping without even realising it. Try these methods to minimise the impact of this:

    1. Change pillowcases at least once a week. Your pillowcase collects dust, saliva, sweat that in turn attracts bacteria and ends up on your face every time you sleep. Put your pillowcases through the wash or change them weekly.
    2. Get your beauty sleep! Sleep deprivation and stress can manifest as bad skin, so make sure you're getting 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep every night. If you have trouble sleeping, trying the stillness method that I use - I lay as still as possible and focus on deep slow rhythmic breathing, after 15 minutes I've fallen deeply asleep without even realising.

More Tips & Tricks

  • Exercise. Exercise increases your body's blood flow, which in turn nourishes skin cells. Exercise is also a great way of fighting stress, another cause of bad skin.
  • Wash your hair regularly. Make sure you ONLY wash it 3 times a week because washing it too often can damage your hair and also ruin the natural oils in your hair. Your hair can come in contact with your face. If your hair is clean, there's less chance that oil and dirt will transfer to your face.
